Saving a Life: An option for dog owners...
I have to admit I am a dog lover to the extreme. I always want to do more (volunteering, fostering, etc) but my heart can handle the fostering. My time and health limits my volunteering. So I had to find another option for me and my dogs to do some good. I have two very beautiful yellow labs: Diesel and Ripley. They are very young and energetic and very hard to handle at one time. Last year I stumbled across a cool option to get involved: The Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank. Seven times a year, Diesel donates blood to help save a life!!! It is very simple to sign up and they have several facilities around the area to bring your pet on donation day. All you have to do is fill out paperwork, submit and then EVBB will do a physical on your pet to ensure there are no issues. There is a weight minimum - 38 pounds. I was very excited to find out last year that Diesel's second donation had saved a life in NJ. They sent him a letter!! There are tons of benefits of being a donor besides the satisfaction knowing you are helping. Listed below are few of the benefits of being a donor:
- For each unit of blood donated, a donor is eligible to receive one unit of blood or plasma should illness or injury ever warrant its use.
- EVBB tag which identifies the dog as a blood donor, and can be traced through the EVBB if the owner cannot otherwise be located
- EVBB bandanna identifying the donor as a life saver
- Various free pet health and nutrition giveaways
- And plenty of dog treats before and after each donation.
I encourage anyone who is a dog fanatic, like me to, check it out and sign your dog up, it does make a difference!!
